Types of ute rack

Rack typeBest for
Rear sports bar / rear ladder rackSingle ladder or short loads — bolts to the rear of the tray
Headboard rackStrengthens the headboard + carries long loads forward
Full-length / cab-over rackLong loads (ladders, pipe, timber) carried over the cab
Monster rackHeavy loads, multiple ladders, scaffolding — for serious tradies
Toolbox / roof rackCarries gear on top of toolboxes or canopies

Aluminium vs steel racks

Aluminium racks are lighter (better payload) and won’t rust. Steel racks are tougher against knocks and cheaper to repair. Choose alloy for most trade and touring use; steel for heavy industrial loads.

Capacity, length & safety

Match the rack’s rated capacity to your loads, and stay within your ute’s legal carrying limits. Always tie loads down properly with quality tie-downs — see our load restraints range.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a sports bar and a ladder rack?
A sports bar is mainly cosmetic / a single-load mount on the rear of the tray. A ladder rack is engineered to carry long loads safely — usually a rear bar plus a headboard, with proper tie-down points.
How much weight can a ute ladder rack carry?
Typical alloy ladder racks carry around 100–150 kg distributed; heavy-duty steel and monster racks more. Always check the rated capacity and stay within your ute’s payload.
Aluminium or steel ute rack?
Alloy for weight saving and rust resistance (most trades); steel for the heaviest loads and easier on-site repair.
Can I add a roof rack on my canopy?
Yes — we build roof racks that bolt onto Duratray canopies, ideal for ladders, awnings and gear.
Do you fit racks in Brisbane?
Yes — racks are fitted at our Capalaba workshop alongside trays and canopies.
